- Leadership and structure are the cornerstones of any successful organization, shaping the paths to excellence and defining the outcomes of collective efforts. In military settings, the Unit Cadre plays a crucial role in preparing personnel for military courses. At the US Military Academy West Point, the rigorous pre-training provided by Unit Cadres enhances the performance of cadets by instilling discipline and operational acumen.[1] Similarly, in the South African Military Academy, Unit Cadres play a vital role in boosting student performance by providing essential leadership and practical skills before formal training begins.[2] In Nigeria, the influence of Unit Cadre is evident within the Nigerian Army Armour School (NAAS). Here, the preparatory training provided by Unit Cadre significantly impacts the performance of students, equipping them with the necessary skills and discipline to succeed in their academic and military endeavours.[3]

- Survival skills are crucial for individuals operating in environments where modern conveniences are absent, and immediate rescue or support is unavailable. Throughout history, humans have developed a variety of techniques to survive in diverse and often hostile environments. From ancient hunters and gatherers to modern-day military and security personnel, the ability to navigate, provide first aid, and sustain oneself using natural resources has always been vital. In today’s context, survival skills are not only relevant for outdoor enthusiasts but are also critically important for security operatives, particularly those in challenging and unpredictable environments. The Canadian Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2) is known for its extensive survival training, including living off the land. JTF2 operatives are taught to forage for food, hunt, and build shelters in various environments. This training ensures they can sustain themselves during long missions, even when cut off from supply lines. Similarly, the South African Special Task Force is trained in advanced first aid and emergency medical procedures. They are equipped to handle various medical emergencies in the field, from treating snake bites to performing emergency surgeries. In Nigeria, the Nigerian Army Special Forces undergo rigorous training in bushcraft and survival skills. They learn to identify edible plants, hunt for game, and find water sources in the diverse landscapes of Nigeria.

- Food, one of the basic necessities of life, should nourish and sustain us, yet it can become a source of grave danger when contaminated. In 2011, an outbreak of E. coli in Germany led to the deaths of 53 people and caused severe illness in nearly 4,000 others, highlighting the global vulnerability to food-borne illnesses.[1] Similarly, in 2017, a severe outbreak of food poisoning in South Africa, traced back to contaminated processed meat, claimed over 200 lives and affected hundreds more.[2] In Nigeria, August 2020 saw a tragic incident in Lagos where a wedding celebration turned into a catastrophe as 15 attendees fell ill due to food poisoning, resulting in three fatalities.
- Food poisoning, also known as food-borne illness, is defined as an illness caused by consuming contaminated food, with contaminants including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or toxins. Contamination refers to the presence of harmful substances in food, which can occur at any stage of food production and handling. Hygiene, in this context, pertains to practices that prevent food contamination and ensure safe food consumption.

- Energy is a cornerstone of modern society, powering homes, industries, and transportation. However, reliance on traditional fossil fuels has led to environmental degradation and economic vulnerabilities. In response, many countries are transitioning to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has emerged as a viable alternative, offering numerous benefits over conventional fuels. For example, the United States has significantly reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by increasing CNG usage in transportation. Similarly, South Africa has adopted CNG extensively, reducing air pollution and enhancing energy security.[1] In Nigeria, the adoption of CNG presents an opportunity to address multiple challenges, including environmental concerns, energy access, and economic diversification.
